Moskovsky Prospekt is one of the main thoroughfares of St.
Petersburg, around which the district of the same name is formed. The
avenue starts in the center of the city, and in the south passes into
the Pulkovskoye highway. This is the road to the airport and at the same
time one of the best ensembles of Soviet architecture in the city, which
wormed its way into a couple of interesting pre-revolutionary monuments:
the bright Chesme Church and the monumental Chesme Palace, which still
remembers Catherine II. In the northern part of the district, closer to
the center, there are even more traces of old St. Petersburg, including
the Varshavsky railway station, the Moscow Gates and the Novodevichy
Convent. The Pulkovo Heights with the famous observatory and monuments
of the Great Patriotic War are also interesting.
In the time of
Peter the Great, three slingshots (barriers) were installed in the area
of the Moscow tract, later called Near, Middle and Far. Now few people
remember about them, but even then they marked the key points of the
region: the Moscow Gate was later built on the site of the Near Rogatka,
the Srednyaya Rogatka now became Victory Square, and the Far Rogatka
stood at the foot of Pulkovo Mountain, later occupied by the world
famous observatory.
There were milestones along the tract, 13 of
which have been preserved. For the rest of the august persons, travel
palaces were built, and if the oldest, Srednerogatsky (1714), was
demolished in Soviet times, then Kikerikekinsky, built half a century
later, has been preserved and is now known as Chesmensky, paired with a
very beautiful church of the same time.
The Moscow side took
shape as a separate district back in 1718, when Peter I divided St.
Petersburg into five parts. In the first half of the 19th century,
continuous urban development came to the Obvodny Canal, and further
along the tract there were dachas of titled owners (who have not
survived to this day). At the same time, the tract itself was leveled,
widened and paved with hewn timber; at that time, before the
construction of the railways, it was here that the main supply of the
city went.
The railways took over the main part of the supply and
gradually turned the southern suburbs of St. Petersburg into a large
factory outskirts. The border of the city for a long time passed along
the Moscow Outpost with triumphal gates. Before the revolution, the city
ended only a little to the south, in the area of modern Roshchinskaya
Street. In 1919, the border was moved to Srednyaya Rogatka, and in 1961,
the Pulkovo Heights along with the airport were added to the Moskovsky
District.
If there are many pre-revolutionary houses in the
northern part of Moskovsky Prospekt, then the area south of the Moscow
Gates is mainly a city of the Soviet era, the result of large-scale
development of the 1930-1950s and one of the largest ensembles of
Stalinist architecture in St. Petersburg. During the Great Patriotic
War, the front line approached the city closest from the south, and
although Moskovsky Prospekt itself remained under the control of the
Soviet army, the fighting took place on the Pulkovo Heights, very close
by. After the war, the largest military memorial in the city was created
in this area (on Victory Square) and the Moscow Victory Park was laid
out, which became an important place of memory for the events of the
Leningrad blockade.
Metro
The southern part of the blue metro line runs along
Moskovsky Prospekt. Depending on where you want to go, you may need the
following stations:
2 (Moscow-Petrogradskaya) line Frunzenskaya.
Near the Warsaw railway station, the Church of the Resurrection, the
House of Textiles.
2 (Moscow-Petrogradskaya) line Moscow Gates.
In addition to the Moscow Gates, there are many attractions in the
vicinity of the station: the Novodevichy Convent, the Novodevichy and
Gromovskoye cemeteries, the former bacteriological laboratory, the fire
department of 1925, and the old bakery.
2 (Moscow-Petrograd) line
Electrosila. In the vicinity of the station, interesting things are the
Moscow District Council and the Tsvetochny post.
2
(Moscow-Petrogradskaya) line Victory Park. It is located almost in the
Moscow Victory Park itself. Near the Russian National Library, the
General's House.
2 (Moscow-Petrogradskaya) line Moskovskaya.
Surrounded by the ensemble of Moscow Square, not far from Chesme Palace
and Chesme Church, buses to Pulkovo Heights.
2
(Moscow-Petrogradskaya) Zvezdnaya line. It is located among typical
Soviet buildings. There is little interesting nearby, except for the
Kirov meat processing plant and houses for its workers.
By bus
and trolleybus
There is enough land transport here, although on most
of Moskovsky Prospekt it duplicates the metro. Buses have no alternative
only in the south, in the area of Aviagorodok and Pulkovo Heights. From
the center towards Moskovsky Prospekt, the fastest way is to take the
metro, but if you do not want to use it, buses No. 3, 26, 50, 65, 225
and trolleybuses No. 15, 17 are at your service.
By tram
From
Moscow Square to the Novodevichy Convent, a very convenient route number
29 quite often runs along the avenue, covering many of the area's
attractions. You may also need tram number 45, covering the Soviet part
of the avenue from Moscow Square to Blagodatnaya Street (Elektrosila).

1 Varshavsky railway
station, emb. Bypass channel, 118C. The historical building closes the
prospect of Voznesensky and Izmailovsky prospects from St. Isaac's
Square. It was built in 1857-1860 for railway communication between the
capital and the royal residence in Gatchina. For a long time, the
station worked side by side with the nearby Baltic, until in 2001 all
trains were removed from here, the rails were removed, and the vacant
place was built up with new housing. The eclectic style of the station
building is interesting not only for its architecture, but also for the
largest food mall in Europe located inside.
2 Church of the
Resurrection of Christ near the Warsaw railway station , emb. Bypass
channel, 116. ☎ +7 (812) 316-00-49. 8:00–19:30. Laid down on August 14,
1894 in honor of the marriage of Emperor Nicholas II. In fact, the
church was built in 1904-1908, and its large building in the neo-Russian
style has become perhaps the most visible in the area. The temple was
closely associated with the Alexander Nevsky sobriety society. After the
revolution, the interior was subjected to a typical rout, the building
was used as a warehouse and a cinema. The exterior of the church has
been restored, inside it is light and spacious, but modest. In recent
times, a rather clumsy monument to the royal couple was erected next to
the church.

3 Moscow triumphal
gates, pl. Moscow Gates, 1G. The gate was built in 1838 in memory of the
victories of the Russian army in the wars with Turkey, Persia and Poland
in 1826-1831 and still remains the world's largest monument made of cast
iron. At that time, the border of the city passed here and the Moscow
outpost of the same name was located, which is reminiscent of a memorial
sign installed next to the entrance to the metro. The gate was
dismantled in 1936 under the pretext of expanding Moskovsky Prospekt,
but in 1959 it was reassembled. They impress with their empire-style
twelve-column portico and sculptural compositions of the geniuses of
victory and trophies. It is quite difficult to see the sculptures in
detail from the ground, and it is impossible to get close to the gate,
but a small copy of one of the compositions adorns the underground lobby
of the Moscow Gates metro station.
4 Zastavnaya fire station,
Moskovsky pr., 116. The building of the fire station in the style of
constructivism was built in 1925. Although by that time the border of
the city had moved far to the south, the square at the Moscow Gates was
called Zastava in the old fashioned way, from where the name came from.
The fire station has an asymmetric rectangular tower that is designed to
dry hoses, although it resembles a lookout tower.
5 Bacteriological laboratory, 99 Moskovsky pr. This is an elegant
two-story mansion that was originally used for a very rough job:
butchering animal carcasses from a nearby slaughterhouse in order to
make vaccines for livestock. Now the main building of the laboratory is
occupied by the Department of Epizootology of the St. Petersburg State
University of Veterinary Medicine. Near the laboratory building, at the
pedestrian crossing, one of the old milestones, installed in 1772-1775
on the Moscow tract, has been preserved. On the other side of the
avenue, in the square, you can find a modern and rather pretty bust
monument to General Miloradovich, the hero of the war of 1812.
6
Petrograd Bakery Plant, Malaya Mitrofanevskaya st., 4 and 4L. The
Petrograd mechanical bakery was built in 1915-1918. It has two
buildings: administrative and production. The administrative façade
faces directly onto the street and, being made in the Art Nouveau style,
looks like a picturesque English manor rather than a factory building.
The production plant is also visible from the street, but you can’t get
close to it, the territory is fenced. Unlike the administrative
building, it is made of red brick and really looks like a factory.
7 Voskresensky Novodevichy Convent , 100 Moskovsky pr. This
convent was first located on the territory of the Smolny Monastery,
later on Vasilyevsky Island, and in the 1840-1850s it was moved to the
then outskirts, and at the same time a cemetery was laid in the depths
of the quarter. The main building of the monastery is shaped like the
letter P; the main temple is built into it - the Resurrection Cathedral
in the Russian style - and two small churches. The monastery was rich
and continued to be completed until the revolution - they added a bell
tower similar to the Moscow Ivan the Great at the entrance and the Kazan
Church in the neo-Byzantine style near the cemetery. Under the Soviet
regime, the bell tower was demolished, and the rest of the buildings
were transferred to the research institute of mechanical engineering.
The interiors of the temples of mechanical engineering did not
survive, they were created anew in modern times. The bell tower was also
recently rebuilt. Of the churches of the monastery, only the
Resurrection Cathedral is open daily, decorated with beautiful fresh
antique paintings. On the territory of the monastery, no one really
cares how you are dressed, but inside the churches there is a dress code
like in any other. Apr 2023 edit
8 Novodevichy Cemetery (entrance
through the territory of the monastery). May to September: 09:00–18:00,
October to April: 09:00–17:00. Necropolis of a closed type, founded in
1845. In tsarist times, the cemetery was prestigious, not for the poor.
After the revolution, many burials were destroyed, but you can still
find pre-revolutionary picturesque crypts here (although most of them
are in rather poor condition). This cemetery cannot be compared with the
Lavra or Literary bridges in terms of the number of famous graves, but
it is here that Vrubel, Nekrasov, Tyutchev and Rimsky-Korsakov are
buried.
9 "House of Textiles", Moskovsky Prospekt, 79. The
monumental building in the style of Stalinist neoclassicism stands out
among other houses on Moskovsky Prospekt. It was built for the workers
of a weaving factory located nearby. Construction of the house began in
the late 1930s. Before the war, they managed to build the northern wing
and the central part, and the southern wing was completed only in 1951.
The project also provides for a square in front of the central part of
the house. It contains a porphyry vase, similar to the one in the Summer
Garden.
10 Gromovskoye Old Believer Cemetery (1 km west of the
metro station). 9:00–18:00. The Gromovskoye cemetery was opened in 1835
on land donated by the millionaire merchant Gromov, after whom it was
named. Until 1917, it belonged to the Old Believers. Now there are few
visited graves here, many tombstones are damaged or completely lost.
Several dozens of monuments over the merchant graves of various families
still survived to this day. They give some idea of the nature of the Old
Believer epitaph, which has remained unchanged for many decades: last
name, first name, patronymic, title of the deceased; year, day and hour
of death; age, most often accurate to days; usually an angel's day. The
date of birth was usually not given.
The walking path from the metro
to the cemetery passes through the industrial zone. It is better to use
bus 286 from 1 (Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) line Baltiyskaya to the stop "Old
Believer Street". From the side of this street, one can also find the
steadily decaying and boarded up, but still beautiful cemetery gates.

11 Moscow District Council, Moskovsky pr., 129. The building of the
Moscow District Council was built in 1930-1935 in the style of
constructivism. The architects combined functionality with the
originality of the figurative solution: a round five-story tower adjoins
the horizontal elongated building, making the building emphatically
asymmetrical. A huge atrium was made inside the tower, covered with a
dome and making a strong impression. Now the building is occupied by the
administration of the Moscow region and other state-owned organizations,
admission is free. Across the road is a slightly earlier sample of the
Leningrad avant-garde (thoroughly killed, unfortunately, by the latest
reconstruction) - the former Ilyich Palace of Culture, now the Moskovsky
Cultural Center.
12 Post Tsvetochny, intersection of
Novoroshchinskaya and Tsvetochnaya streets. On March 10, 1918, a special
train No. 4001 departed from the Tsvetochnaya station towards Moscow,
carrying members of the new Soviet government headed by Lenin. For
safety reasons, the windows of the train were tightly curtained, and the
lights in the compartment were not turned on. This is how the transfer
of the capital from Petrograd to Moscow took place. Now Tsvetochnaya is
an ordinary goods station in the industrial zone. Built in 1902 in the
Art Nouveau style, the tiny station building does not even have a
memorial plaque.

16 Moscow Square. The center of the Moscow region and the largest
square in St. Petersburg. According to Stalin's general plan, it was
planned to move the city center here, making the square a place for mass
parades and demonstrations. The first thing you will see here will
surely be the House of Soviets in the Stalinist Empire style, built in
1941 for the city administration, which, however, did not have time to
move here. Instead, the building was used during the war as an
observation post, and is now given over to a business center. Of great
interest is the monumental 100-meter frieze depicting the everyday life
of the Soviet people and crowned with the coat of arms of the RSFSR.
Also, the architectural ensemble of the square includes the largest
monument to Lenin in the city, two 10-story residential buildings
opposite the House of Soviets and 7-8-story buildings on the sides of
it, in front of which there are squares. In 2006, a fountain complex was
opened on the square. It is open during the summer period from 11:00 to
23:00. Apr 2023 edit
17 Chesmenskiy Palace,
st. Gastello, 15. In this place, on the road to Tsarskoye Selo,
Catherine II ordered the construction of a small travel palace
(1774-1777) in pseudo-Gothic style, vaguely reminiscent of a medieval
English castle. Later, the empress named the palace and the neighboring
church Chesme on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the naval
victory over Turkey at Chesma. In the 19th century, outbuildings were
added to the building and it was adapted as an almshouse for veterans of
the tsarist army. In Soviet times, and to this day, it is occupied by
various educational institutions. Although nothing of the palace remains
inside, the exterior of the building is largely preserved, although
spoiled by sloppy restoration.
18
Chesme Church (Church of the Nativity
of John the Baptist), st. Lensoveta, 12. 09:00–19:00. Built a little
later than the palace (in 1780) and also in pseudo-Gothic style, but
much more pretentious. Now its unusually elegant architecture contrasts
sharply with the surrounding Soviet buildings; despite its solid size,
the church seems weightless and almost like a toy. There are no similar
churches not only in St. Petersburg, but also in Russia (except for the
later clumsy copy in the Tver region). Above the entrance are two
statues in the antique spirit, symbolizing Faith and Hope. The interior
has not been preserved, reconstructed, but also worthy of inspection.
The white and gold iconostasis rhymes perfectly with the architecture of
the building; it was made by modern craftsmen on the model of the
original one that burned down in a fire. Behind the church is a small
military cemetery, where the veterans of the Suvorov and Kutuzov
campaigns were originally buried, and then the heroes of the Great
Patriotic War.

19 Kirov Meat Processing Complex, 13 Moskovskoye Highway (1.3 km from
the metro station). Built in 1930-33, the Kirov Meat Processing Plant is
one of the industrial facilities in the constructivist style. It was
created as a replacement for the old livestock yard, located in the
northern part of Moskovsky Prospekt at its intersection with the Obvodny
Canal. Two bronze sculptures of bulls (1824-1827) were also transferred
to the new plant, but now they are under restoration and are missing. In
1992, the meat processing plant ceased to bear the name of Kirov and
became known as "Samson"; in the years that followed, the plant's
productivity declined and it closed in 2000. Currently, residential
development is underway on the territory; the main buildings have
survived and are listed as architectural monuments, which, however, does
not save them from desolation and destruction.
20 Residential
buildings of a meat-packing plant, 14 and 16 Moskovskoye shosse. Two
Stalinist-style residential buildings effectively frame a semicircular
square. They were built in 1936-1941 for the workers of the already
mentioned meat-packing plant. If you cross the highway and go to the
Torgovy Dvor shopping center, you can see another house, built in 1939,
in which the top management lived.

21 Fountain with sphinxes,
Pulkovskoe highway, 53 (stop "Pulkovskoe highway, 74 - Fire station").
An artifact miraculously preserved to this day, placed in 1809 at the
foot of the Pulkovo Heights for travelers who could rest here and water
the horses. Despite the utility of the drinking fountain, it was made
very elegant, and each of the four sphinxes reclining at the foot of the
rotunda with a fountain bowl has its own facial expression. Although the
fountain (now defunct) is located in the middle of a busy highway, it is
not difficult to inspect it: a special descent leads to it from a nearby
elevated pedestrian crossing.
22 This object is included in the
UNESCO World Heritage List The complex of buildings of the Pulkovo
Observatory, Pulkovskoe sh., 65. Initially, the St. astronomical
observations. A special commission chose the top of Pulkovo Mountain as
such a place. The observatory was founded in 1835 and solemnly
consecrated in 1839. A century later, the entire complex of buildings
was destroyed by German air raids, but in the 1950s it was restored with
the appearance of the main building preserved.
The complex of
buildings of the observatory is located in a picturesque park (open
around the clock), while the observatory itself operates to this day.
There is a museum in the main building, you can also visit the military
cemetery "Pulkovskoye" and a small cemetery of astronomers. On the
territory of the observatory, various excursions are regularly held,
including custom ones, you can also take a walk on your own, examining
astronomical pavilions and other tricky structures; however, there are
no signs with information near them, and without a guide it will be
difficult to understand what is why here.
23 Pulkovo meridian,
the territory of the observatory. To mark the national zero meridian of
the Russian Empire in 1834-1838, a meridian path was laid along the
northern slope of the Pulkovo mountain. It was destroyed during the war
and restored in 2012-2013. It is interesting that, according to
surveyors, over 200 years, due to the movement of lithospheric plates,
the path has shifted and now has more of a memorial than practical
value.
24 This object is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List
Pulkovo Frontier, Pulkovskoe sh., 100. The 1967 memorial marks the line
where the German offensive was stopped in September 1941. The dominant
position of the Pulkovo Heights, which made it possible to monitor the
entire left bank of the Neva up to the center of St. Petersburg,
determined their importance during the Great Patriotic War. The memorial
consists of a mosaic stele with images of military scenes, two tanks and
a dozen concrete gouges, all this is located in a small square.
25 Eco-trail through the former forest nursery. Passes through the
already existing forest on the territory of the former forest nursery.
On the way there are benches made of natural material, bird feeders,
bridges over ravines, as well as stands with information about trees,
shrubs and herbs found on the route.

expressive, personifying the defending Leningraders. In the center of
the open memorial hall, made in the form of a broken ring, there is a
tragic sculptural group "Blockade". All this can be viewed at any time
