The north of St. Petersburg is formed by the districts located to the north of the right bank of the Neva and Bolshaya Nevka. The northern part includes three administrative districts of St. Petersburg: Vyborgsky, Kalininsky and Primorsky. On the territory of administrative units, historically established districts are distinguished: Vyborgskaya side, Ozerki, Shuvalovo, Parnassus, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Pargolovo, Levashovo, Polyustrovo, Piskarevka, Ruchi, Kushelevka, Grazhdanka, Devyatkino, Staraya Derevnya, Kolomyagi, Kamenka.
It got its name in the first quarter of the 18th century from the
old road to the city of Vyborg. This road ran approximately along the
line of modern avenues - Bolshoi Sampsonievsky and Engels and began at
the trading town of Niena, located at the confluence of the Okhta River
into the Neva. The first settlements of working people arose along the
road, and small enterprises were built along the banks of the Neva and
Bolshaya Nevka. In the northern part of the Vyborg side, in the wooded,
less swampy areas, in the middle and in the second half of the 18th
century, country dachas of the court nobility and nobles appeared. The
memory of them is still preserved in the names of certain historical
districts of the north of St. Petersburg (Shuvalovo, Kushelevka,
Lanskaya). In the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, many
large industrial enterprises appeared in the region. Factory buildings
made of red brick to this day determine the architectural appearance of
the old quarters of the Vyborg side. Many addresses of the Vyborg side
are associated with the events of the 1917 revolution and the leader of
the Bolsheviks, Lenin. In the second half of the 20th century, the
northern part became a place of mass housing development. Buildings are
also being built, some of them have become a symbol of the city (the
building of the Finland Station).
The most convenient way to get to the north of St. Petersburg, with the exception of the eastern part of the Vyborg side, Polyustrov and Piskarevka, is by metro. In the eastern part of the Vyborg side, Polyustrovo and Piskarevka in the coming decades can only be reached by land transport.

square in the old part of the North of St. Petersburg. It is not only a
historical place, but also a gateway to all parts of the city.

Monument "Lenin on an armored car."
is one of the key symbols of the Soviet era, since it was here that
Lenin, getting off the train after returning to Russia in April 1917,
outlined to the workers his own vision of the revolutionary situation,
which later entered history and official mythology under the name "April
Theses". Lenin spoke from an armored car, which is reminiscent of the
shape of the monument, as well as the well-established expression "climb
on an armored car."
Military Medical Academy ( 1
(Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) Line Ploshchad Lenina). The main buildings of the
Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy are located in the block near the
Neva embankment, to the left of the Liteiny Bridge. The history of the
creation and construction of the academy dates back to the times of
Peter the Great. In 1715-1717, the first buildings were built, although
they have not survived to our time. During the XVIII-XX centuries, the
academy developed and expanded. Currently, the buildings of the academy
are located in different districts of St. Petersburg, but the main
buildings have remained in the old place or in close proximity to it.
The complex of buildings and monuments of the academy includes: edit
Main building with front yard garden. The building in the style of
classicism was built in 1799-1803, according to the project of the
architect A. Porto, and in 1806-1809 the construction was continued by
the architect Voronikhin A.N. In front of the building there is a garden
with a fountain "Hygieia" (1872-1873), sculptor I. Jensen. In 1833-1834.

Sampsonievskiy Cathedral, Bolshoi Sampsonievskiy pr. 41. One of the
oldest churches in the city, the first wooden church was built in 1710,
a year after the Battle of Poltava (June 27, 1709). The temple was
consecrated in honor of Saint Sampson the Hospitable, on whose day the
victory was won. The current building was built in the Baroque style in
1728-1740. The ensemble of the cathedral also includes - a monument to
Peter I opposite the entrance (according to the model of Antokolsky
1872), a three-tiered bell tower and an elegant chapel (1909, in the
spirit of Rastrelli's works). The bell tower is good, but the building
of the cathedral itself turned out to be not very expressive for the
architect, and even it remains unknown who exactly it was. On the sides
of the bell tower there are plates with fragments of Peter's speeches
before and after the battle of Poltava, which help to feel both the
significance of those events and the cathedral as a monument. In the
18th century, there was a cemetery at the cathedral, now a monument to
Volynsky and his comrades who were executed on charges of conspiracy
under Empress Anna in 1740 reminds of it. On the former territory of the
cemetery behind the cathedral is a small Sampson garden. In the interior
of the cathedral, the unique icons and carved iconostases of the 18th
century are of the greatest interest. Until 2017, the cathedral was a
branch of the museum complex of St. Isaac's Cathedral, currently
transferred to the church.
4 The Church of Anna Kashinskaya
(Metochion of the Vvedeno-Oyatsky Monastery), Bolshoy Sampsonievsky
Prospekt 53. This almost the only church in Russia in honor of the
little-known Saint Anna Kashinskaya was built in 1907-1909. The
architect Aplaksin created the building clearly based on ancient Russian
architecture, the exact prototype cannot be recognized, but it is
interesting to see it from the outside. The interior of the Soviet
government did not survive, completely remake.

Water tower. The building of the brick-style tower
was also built in 1907-1909 by Adam Dietrich and reaches a height of 30

institute with artesian water, but the quality of the water turned out
to be unsatisfactory, and a meteorological observatory was set up in the
tower.

the park. In 1941, a field airfield was built on part of the park
territory, which played an important role in the defense of Leningrad
during the blockade of 1941-1944. At the end of the war, the territory
of the airfield was again planted with pine trees. Good place to stay.

highway of the Vyborgsky district is about 15 km. The street is one of
the longest in the city. The area was built up mainly in the post-war
period, but some low-rise buildings of pre-revolutionary construction
have also been preserved. Some of them are connected with the

The name of the district suggests that its main attraction is the
reservoirs. The landscape of the area and the Suzdal lakes are a
favorite vacation spot for residents of St. Petersburg at all times of
the year. The proximity of the lakes to the metro station also plays a
big role. The lakes were built up mainly with one-story wooden private
houses with backyard gardens. The area retained its appearance until the
beginning of the 21st century, when cottage development began to attack
private buildings, green gardens and lake shores. The faceless standard
buildings of the era of the Soviet Union, which are built up in
neighboring areas, have been replaced by an even uglier building of the
“developing wild market”. The greenery of blossoming gardens is replaced
by deaf and high brick fences of "cottages-castles". The area begins to
present an increasingly depressing impression.

St. Petersburg is a relatively young city, just over 300 years old.
However, on its territories there are settlements with a much more
ancient history, for example, the former city of Nienschanz, located at
the confluence of the Okhta River with the Neva. One of these
settlements is also located in the North - this is the village of
Pargolovo, which is more than 500 years old, as the granite stone on the
Vyborgskoye highway reminds of when leaving St. Petersburg for the
Karelian Isthmus. Until the beginning of the 18th century, this area was
inhabited by Finnish peoples, who formed settlements here on the banks
of the Starozhilovka River. The name of one of the lakes on the
outskirts of Pargolovo, Finnish Lake, which in the late 18th and early
20th centuries was called Chukhonskoye Lake, reminds us of those times.
The population of the settlements was distinguished by its customs and
behavior, as a result of which, among the Russian population, the
expression “like a Pargolovsky chukhna” appeared in relation to the
inhabitants of Pargolov. During the reign of Empress Elizabeth, the
surroundings of Pargolov became a place for the construction of numerous
dachas of prominent people of that time. The largest estate belonged to
Count Peter Ivanovich Shuvalov.
Shuvalovsky Park ( 2

unique landscape park with an area of more than 100 hectares is located
on the southeastern outskirts of the village of Pargolovo, on lands
donated, like the title of count, to P.I. Shuvalov personally by Empress
Elizaveta Petrovna. For many years (1746-1917), a palace and park
ensemble was erected here, which on modern maps of the city is simply
called Shuvalovsky Park, and on some it’s just a green spot without a
name. Unlike parks in the southern suburbs of St. Petersburg,
Shuvalovsky Park is little known. And this is despite the fact that its
palace and park complex is a monument of architecture and landscape art
of the 18th century of federal significance, which is included in the
UNESCO World Heritage List under No. 540. This is partly due to the fact
that the ensemble is not a museum-reserve, and the palace and other
buildings of the complex are occupied by one of the scientific
organizations of St. Petersburg, which made it possible to preserve
their external appearance in an acceptable condition. The uniqueness of
the park lies in the peculiar ruggedness of the relief, as well as in
the fact that it has almost completely preserved its original state.
This is the only garden and park ensemble in Russia, located in an area
with a height difference of about 40 meters and different water levels
in ponds and lakes. During the Great Patriotic War, the reserve
headquarters of the commander of the Leningrad Front was located in the
park.
Grand Palace. The building of the palace that has survived
to our time was built in 1912-1914 on the site of a burnt palace in the

the palace has been occupied by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise

Mount Old Parnassus. A mountain
61.5 meters high is located in the southwest of the Grand Palace. From
the height of the mountain in the XVIII-XIX centuries it was possible to
observe the capital on the banks of the Neva. On the platform at the top
of the mountain there was a bench, where A.S. Pushkin often visited.
Mount New Parnassus. An artificial hill 63 meters high. South of Mount
New Parnassus, artificial reservoirs are located - the Upper and Lower
Ponds. Each of them has another name: the first is “Napoleon's Hat”, and
the second is “Napoleon's Shirt”. They got their names due to the
similarity of configurations that are clearly visible from New
Parnassus, and with Napoleon the names are associated in memory with the
third owner of the estate - Pavle Andreevich, adjutant of the Emperor of
Russia Alexander I, who overthrew Napoleon.
Church of the Holy
Apostles Peter and Paul. 1831-1839 A building in pseudo-Gothic style on

and M.P. Mussorgsky are associated with the church. Crypt-grotto of

Pushkin also visited here. A walk through the church cemetery is

Historic district in the northwestern part of the city. The first
part of the name comes from the dacha, which was located on the left
bank of the Black River from the beginning of the 18th century, on the
lands granted by Peter I into the possession of the commandants of the
Peter and Paul Fortress. The land of the Commandant's dacha, and the
field adjacent to the dacha was called the Commandant's. A hippodrome
was equipped on the field, which since 1908 has been used for
demonstration flights of aviators. By 1910 to the west of the
hippodrome, an airfield was built, which became the second constituent
word in the name of the area. The history of the Commandant Airfield is
the history of domestic aviation. The names of designers S.V. Ilyushin
and N.N. Polikarpov, pilots V.P. Chkalov, P.A. Pokryshev, P.A. Pilyutov,
A.I. parachute G.E. Kotelnikov. During the First World War of 1914-1918
and the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 it was a military airfield.
During the years of the blockade, transport planes carrying cargo and
people landed at the Commandant airfield. Since the 1970s, the territory
of the airfield has become one of the "sleeping" areas, where mass
housing development was carried out. The memory of the airfield has been
preserved not only in the name of the district, but also in the names of
streets and avenues: Aerodromnaya, Testers, Parashutnaya, etc. Apart
from the names of the streets, today there is little that reminds of the
airfield that existed here.

A historical place and one of the oldest settlements on the coast of
the Gulf of Finland. The first mention of a small village dates back to
the beginning of the 16th century. Translated from Finnish, Lakhta means
bay, bay. After the Northern War of 1700-1721. the village ended up in
the vicinity of the new capital of the Russian state. In the early years
of the founding of St. Petersburg, Peter I often stayed here. It was
from here that the creation of the near suburbs of St. Petersburg began.
He chose Lakhta as the place of his country residence, called "Near
Dubki", the construction of which began in 1721. The palace stood not
far from the coast of the Gulf of Finland, behind the palace there was a
garden with greenhouses. Along the shore of the bay, a part of the
ancient park has been preserved, where the moats surrounding the estate,
a round island on which the palace was located, and a canal overlooking
the shore of the bay are visible in the thickets. In the vicinity of
Lakhta, a "thunder-stone" weighing 1638 tons was found, after processing
it became a pedestal for the "Bronze Horseman". From the north, the
largest green massif of the city, the Yuntolovsky reserve, adjoins
Lakhta.
You can get to Lakhta by train from the Sestroretsk direction
from the Finland Station ( 1 (Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) line Ploshchad
Lenina) to the Lakhta platform, from ( 2 (Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya) line
Chernaya Rechka) - bus 211, from ( 5 (Frunzensko-Primorskaya ) Old
Village line) - buses 110, 120, 216.
Yuntolovsky reserve, St.
Petersburg, Russia 197373. Specially protected natural area with an area
of 976.8 hectares. The reserve is an international natural heritage,
plays an important role in preserving the ecological system of the
Baltic Sea and the northwestern region of Russia. The territory was
declared a reserve in 1720 by decree of Peter the Great. Numerous
coastal types and groups of vegetation are represented on the territory.
The vegetation of the Zakaznik territory is a complex set of wetland
biotopes with a pronounced, contrasting zonality. The natural systems of
the reserve have been significantly altered by human activity,
especially in recent "market" years.
Lake Lakhtinsky spill.
Lacustrine-lagoon reservoir, which has water exchange with the Gulf of
Finland. The lake is the main landscape-forming complex of the reserve
and the wetland system of the Lakhta lowland. On the shores of the lake
there are the Lakhtinskoye swamp, near-river and coastal small-leaved
forest types, waterlogged pine forests, semi-aquatic types of
vegetation. The lake is a good place for recreation and fishing.
Church of St. Peter the Apostle. Wooden one-domed church on a stone
foundation. 1893-1894 The history of the emergence of the church is
connected with the legend that on November 5, 1724, Peter I, returning
to St. Petersburg from Dubkov, rescued drowning fishermen (according to
other sources, a bot with soldiers). At the same time, Peter I caught a
bad cold and soon died.
A young historic district that celebrated its centenary in March
2007. Olgino owes its birth to the last owners of the Lakhtinsky estate,
Counts Stenbock-Fermors. Representatives of the ancient county family of
Stenbock-Fermor bought the land from Count G. Orlov and owned the coast
of the Gulf of Finland since 1845. It owes its name to the heavenly
patroness O.P. Stenbock-Fermor - Olga. To the north-west of the village
are the expanses of the Olginsky forest park. On the territory of the
forest park there is a natural monument Petrovsky pond.
You can get
to Olgino by electric train of the Sestroretsk direction from Finland
Station ( 1 (Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) line Ploshchad Lenina) to the Olgino
platform, and from ( 2 (Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya) line Chernaya Rechka)
- bus 211, from ( 5 (Frunzensko- Primorskaya) line Old Village) - buses
110, 120, 216.
Petrovsky Pond (Electric train of the Sestroretsk
direction from the Finland Station ( 1 (Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) line
Ploshchad Lenina) to the Morskaya platform). In the place where the
Petrovsky pond is located, in the 18th century there was a Thunder-stone
- a huge granite boulder, which served as the basis of the monument to
Peter I "The Bronze Horseman", the symbol of St. Petersburg. For several
years, the hollow left after the excavation of the Thunder Stone filled
with water and formed a small picturesque pond.
The former country
estate of Count A.V. Stenbock-Fermor, Lakhtinsky pr., 104. The stone
two-story mansion was built in the 1890s. The massive tower makes the
palace romantic, which is why the name "Hunting Castle" stuck behind it.
Previously, it was painted white, so it was sometimes called the "White
Castle". During the Great Patriotic War, a hospital operated in the
building.
A settlement on the cape of the Gulf of Finland, which until 1980 was
part of the Sestroretsk (now Kurortny) district. The first mention is
found in 1500. Then the name of the village sounded like “Fox in the
nose”. Korin in Finnish means a pitfall. In the future, the name
"Korine" was lost. At the beginning of the XVIII century, in
continuation of the estate of Peter I "Near Dubki", the construction of
the estate "Middle Dubki" began. Channels were dug in it and a round
island was poured on which stood a 3-storey stone palace and a regular
park with fountains. In 1728 the palace building was demolished. The
lands owned by Count G. Orlov were poorly developed until the middle of
the 19th century and were a wetland covered with coniferous forest with
an admixture of small birch and large oaks on the hills. The famous
Russian artist I. Shishkin lived in Lisiy Nos, where he painted
paintings, incl. "View from the environs of St. Petersburg, or Landscape
on the Fox Nose", for which. he received a silver medal from the Academy
of Arts. With the construction of the Sestroretsk railway, the village
became a popular summer cottage. During the 900-day siege of Leningrad,
the “Small Road of Life” passed through Lisiy Nos, along which food and
ammunition were delivered to the heroic defenders of Kronstadt and
Oranienbaum to Kronstadt and the “Oranienbaum bridgehead”. It is only
about 6 km to Kronstadt, whose forts are visible from the shore of the
Gulf of Finland in clear weather.
You can get to Lisiy Nos by an
electric train from the Sestroretsk direction from Finlyandsky Station
( 1 (Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) line Ploshchad Lenina) to the Lisyy Nos
platform, as well as from ( 2 (Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya) line Chernaya
Rechka) - bus 211, from ( 5 (Frunzensko-Primorskaya) line Staraya
derevnya) - buses 120, 216.
Prince Vladimir Church, 37 Baltiysky
Ave. The wooden hipped-roof church with two large and six small domes
was built in 1913-1917. In the church there are large floor icons,
transported here over the ice of the Gulf of Finland from Kronstadt
after the destruction of St. Andrew's Cathedral.
Church of Catherine the Great Martyr in Murino, Murino ( 1 (Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya) Devyatkino line). The church was built in 1790 according to the design of the architect N.A. Lvov. Semicircular apses adjoin the cube-shaped building of the temple from the eastern and western sides. The southern façade is adorned with a four-column Tuscan portico covered by a pediment. An octagonal wooden bell tower rises above the church building. The church has an original interior design.
