The Petrograd side is located in Saint Petersburg. The Petrograd side
is a part of St. Petersburg, which includes Zayachiy, Petrogradsky,
Aptekarsky, Krestovsky, Kamenny, Elagin, Petrovsky and several other
islands.
Zayachy/ Hare Island is a small island on which the
Peter and Paul Fortress was built, which laid the foundation for the
city. Inside the fortress are the Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Mint,
the entrance to it is decorated with Peter's triumphal gates. From the
Naryshkin bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress, a signal gun is fired
daily at 12:00.
Petrogradsky Island is the largest island on the
Petrograd Side. Here are the St. Petersburg Zoo, the Music Hall,
Alexander Park, a planetarium, a mosque, the M. Kshesinskaya mansion
(Museum of the Political History of Russia), the Prince Vladimir
Cathedral, the Yubileiny Sports Palace and many other attractions.
Aptekarsky Island
is a large island north of Petrogradsky, separated from it by the
Karpovka River. Here are located the Botanical Garden and the TV tower.
Krestovsky Island is a large island formed by the Malaya and Middle
Nevkas. Its western half is occupied by Primorsky Victory Park and the
Gazprom Arena stadium.
Kamenny Island is an island formed by the
division of Big and Small Nevok. The Kamennoostrovsky Palace and the
Kamennoostrovsky Theater are located here, as well as a number of former
dachas (nowadays mostly governmental).
Yelagin Island is an island
formed by the division of the Big and Middle Nevok. It is completely
occupied by the Central Park of Culture and Leisure (TsPKiO). Here is
the Yelagin Palace.
Petrovsky Island is an island strongly elongated
from southeast to northwest, separated from Petrogradsky by a small
river Zhdanovka. The central yacht club is located on its northwestern
tip, and the Petrovsky stadium is located on the southeastern tip.
The following metro stations are located on Petrogradsky Island:
2
(Moscow-Petrogradskaya) line Gorkovskaya (at the beginning of
Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt, not far from Troitsky Bridge and Zayachy
Island);
2 (Moscow-Petrogradskaya) line Petrogradskaya (at the corner
of Lev Tolstoy Square, where Kamennoostrovsky and Bolshoy Prospekt
intersect, not far from Aptekarsky Island);
5

Prospekt, not far from Tuchkov Bridge, Prince Vladimir Cathedral and
Petrovsky Island);

1 Peter and Paul Fortress. On the territory of the fortress are the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the mint, the monument to Peter I.
Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul
2 Palace of Grand Duke Nikolai
Nikolaevich, Petrovskaya emb. 2 building 1.
3 Pier with lions
Shi-tsza, Petrovskaya emb. (descent to the Neva opposite the house of
Peter I). These are the most unusual stone lions of St. Petersburg. Yes,
lions, not gigantic frogs or pugs! Such sculptures are very common in
Eastern culture, they are installed as guards at the entrance to the
temple, palace, cemetery. But for a European they look very extravagant.
These sculptures were brought as a gift to St. Petersburg by Nikolai
Grodekov, assistant to the Amur Governor-General, from the distant
Chinese city of Girin in 1907.
4 St. Petersburg Mosque. It was built
in 1909-1920 by the architect Nikolai Vasiliev with the participation of
Stepan Krichinsky and Alexander von Gauguin. The mosque has two 48-meter
minarets, the height of the main dome is 39 meters.
5 Prince
Vladimir Cathedral, Blokhin st. 26. The cathedral was built in 1766-1789
instead of the earlier Assumption Cathedral, with long interruptions in
construction, the architects Rinaldi and Starov worked on it. The style
of architecture is transitional from baroque to classicism. The
cathedral was built during the partitions of Poland and the
Russian-Turkish wars, for Catherine II it was important to emphasize the
idea of the continuity of the Russian Empire from Kievan Rus and connect
the legend of the baptism of Prince Vladimir in Chersonese with the
conquest of Crimea. In 1782, the Order of St. Vladimir was established,
in the 19th century. the cathedral was the capitular temple of the
order. The architecture and interior of the cathedral is very solid, but
not the best in the city.

elements, reminiscent of a medieval castle. On one of the six-sided
towers there is a dial with the signs of the zodiac.

righteous John of Kronstadt and named after the Monk John of Rylsky, his
spiritual patron. Built in neo-Byzantine style. Here, in the
temple-tomb, the relics of John of Kronstadt rest, a museum exposition
is also organized.

is a hotel with a restaurant "Kamennoostrovskaya"

Inside the Peter and Paul Fortress
Several objects inside
Petropavlovka belong to the "Museum of the History of St. Petersburg"
and are covered by a single ticket (valid for two days) for 750₽
(students - 400₽, pensioners - 300₽). Of these, the most interesting for
tourists are the following -
1 Peter and Paul Cathedral.
10:00–19:00. 550₽. The relatively high entrance fee to the cathedral is
based on the fact that almost all the Romanov emperors are buried here.
To come to St. Petersburg and not look at the grave of Peter I,
Catherine II and all the rest is somehow wrong from the point of view of
most tourists. The gravestones themselves, however, are quite similar -
they were unified in the middle of the 19th century in one design -
white marble and a golden cross. Different from other tombstones of
Alexander II with his wife made of colored stone. In the interior of the
cathedral, magnificent gilded iconostasis and the pulpit of the 18th
century stand out. The cathedral is connected by a gallery with the one
built at the beginning of the 20th century. The grand ducal tomb, where
princes from the younger branches of the family were buried. The gallery
has a small exhibition on the history of funerals and mourning
ceremonies in the cathedral.
2 Commandant's House (Museum of the
History of St. Petersburg). Thu–Tue 11:00–19:00. 200₽.
3 Prison of
the Trubetskoy Bastion. 10:00–19:00. 250₽.
4 Museum of Cosmonautics
and Rocketry. Thu–Tue 11:00–19:00. 250₽.
A single ticket does not
cover several more so-called "commercial" museum objects and exhibitions
scattered around the fortress. Some of them are rather entertaining -
"Instruments of Torture", "Secrets of Da Vinci", etc. Two objects are
worth special mention -
5 Three centuries above the city (Bell
tower of the Peter and Paul Cathedral). May-Sept, two sessions daily
(except Wednesday) 13:00, 14:30. 250₽. Excursion inside the bell tower
of the Peter and Paul Cathedral, tell about the history of the Spitz,
bells, etc. The tour includes a climb to a height of 43m with a view of
the panorama of the city. Difficult to get into because of the small
number of sessions.
6 Neva panorama. 10:30–19:00. 400₽. Walking
route along the perimeter of the fortress walls. Excellent views of the
city center.
Another museum in the fortress belongs to the Mint -
7 Museum of the History of Money. 10:00–20:00. 200₽. A well-equipped
museum about the history of money in Russia in general and their
production at the Mint in particular. The museum presents - the art
object "Million" (made from ruble coins), the richest collection of
Russian and Soviet coins and banknotes, unique samples of banknotes that
have not gone into circulation, and much more. Several times a day there
is a good sightseeing tour, tickets on the site.
8 Artillery Museum (Kronverk), Alexander Park, 7 ( 2
(Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya) Gorkovskaya Line). Wed–Sun 11:00–18:00. 400₽,
preferential 200₽.
9 House of Peter I , Petrovskaya emb. 6 ( 2
(Moskovsko-Petrogradskaya) Gorkovskaya line). Mon, Wed, Fri-Sun
10:00-18:00, Thu 13:00 - 21:00. 400₽, preferential 150₽. This small
museum is administratively a branch of the Russian Museum. It is a small
hut of three rooms with an area of 60 square meters, which was built for
the king at the time of the founding of the city in 1703. Peter I lived
here in the summer, until the Winter and Summer Palaces were built on
the other side of the Neva. In the future, for the preservation of the
first St. Petersburg structure, a stone "case" was built around the log
house. The exposition includes interiors of the time of Peter the Great,
personal belongings of the tsar, and the history of the house. The tour
will take 15-20 minutes.
10 Museum-apartment of S. M. Kirov,
Kamennoostrovsky pr. 26-28 (Benois house, 4-5 floor). Thu–Tue
11:00–18:00. 250₽. Although the museum is located in the luxurious
Benois house built in 1912, it is dedicated to a different and
completely different era from this house, which began just 10 years
after construction was completed. The old Bolshevik, and later a
prominent party leader, Sergei Mironovich Kirov, received an apartment
in this house in 1926 and lived in it until his death on December 1,
1934, being the first secretary of the Leningrad regional committee. The
memorial apartment has been preserved almost unchanged, and it is
interesting because of the environment in which the then authorities
lived: on the one hand, modestly, but on the other hand, it was stylish
and with all the comfort available at that time, up to one of the first
electric refrigerators bought by the Soviet Union. Union with the
American General Electric. You can look at the impressive library,
workshop and hunting arsenal of Kirov, get acquainted with his
biography, although the everyday aspect is perhaps more interesting:
what they ate, what dishes they used, what slogans they followed in the
early communist era of the late 1920s - early 1930s. The exposition
about children is also curious: the first Soviet nurseries organized at
factories, typical children's things and toys, a school. The museum is
not ideological at all, and the communist slogans hung on the walls look
completely anecdotal: however, this is also the reality of that
historical era.

her son Alexander I, named after the owner of the previous building in
the same place, Catherine's senator Yelagin. Made in the Palladian style
in 1818-1822 according to the design of Rossi. The palace is
distinguished by outstanding interiors in the Empire style. During the
siege, the building burned down and was reconstructed. The current
exposition is devoted to the arts and crafts of the 18th-19th centuries,
it is less interesting compared to other imperial residences in St.
Petersburg.
