Maloyaroslavets is a city on the right bank of the river Luga (Oka basin), 61 km north-east of Kaluga. The administrative center of the Maloyaroslavetsky district of the Kaluga region. It was awarded a City of Military Glory. Maloyaroslavets homonymous municipality Maloyaroslavets city with the status of an urban settlement as the only settlement in its composition.
The fortified settlement of the Vyatichi was located
on a high hill near the Luzha River as early as the 8th century, as
evidenced by the remains of an ancient settlement near the St. Nicholas
Chernoostrovsky Monastery. Although the first mention dates back to
1402, the city itself was founded already at the end of the 14th century
by Prince Vladimir the Brave, the grandson of Ivan Kalita. Initially,
the city was named Yaroslavets in honor of the fourth son of Vladimir
the Brave. After joining the Moscow state in 1485, it was renamed Maly
Yaroslavets to distinguish it from Yaroslavl on the Volga and retained
this name even in Soviet times. Like many other ancient Russian cities,
it was devastated during the Time of Troubles, but was rebuilt and
developed again. In 1776, the city became the center of the
Maloyaroslavetsky district of the Kaluga province. By the beginning of
the 19th century, more than 1,600 inhabitants already lived in
Maloyaroslavets, many of them were engaged in gardening and horticulture
- for which the city gained a reputation as a “city of gardens”.
In October 1812, the army of Napoleon, who left the burnt and plundered
Moscow, approached Maloyaroslavets, who wanted to break through to the
Kaluga lands rich in reserves. The Russian army could not allow this,
forcing the French to retreat along the already devastated Smolensk road
and exterminating a huge army not so much by fighting as by a shortage
of provisions. As a result, on October 24 (October 12, old style) one of
the most important battles of the Patriotic War of 1812 took place -
Maloyaroslavets. It lasted more than 18 hours, the warring parties lost
5,000 people killed on each side, the city changed hands several times,
almost all the buildings and structures in it were destroyed or burned
down. Despite the fact that the French army retained Maloyaroslavets by
the end of the battle, it was surrounded on three sides by Russian
troops. Napoleon, having soberly assessed the situation, was forced to
begin a retreat along the devastated Smolensk road, which, in the end,
led his army to fatal consequences. After the Battle of Maloyaroslavets,
the strategic initiative in the Patriotic War of 1812 passed to the
Russian troops. Now in the city everywhere you can see reminders of this
battle and inscriptions with a quote from M.I. Kutuzova:
“Maloyaroslavets is the limit of the attack, the beginning of the flight
and death of the enemy!”
In October 1941, 20 km west of the city,
on the Ilyinsky lines, the offensive of the German army on Moscow was
delayed - the main blow of the enemy fell on the cadets of the Podolsk
military schools. From October 18, 1941 to January 2, 1942, the city was
under short-term occupation. In the post-war period, many residents
began to leave for more industrialized cities, including neighboring
Obninsk, which received city status in 1956. From the mid-1960s,
Maloyaroslavets began to develop its own industry, but the status of the
center of the local agglomeration was already firmly entrenched in the
larger Obninsk.
At present, Maloyaroslavets is a small quiet
town, where most of the sights are reminiscent of the famous battle of
1812. Pre-revolutionary buildings have been partially preserved,
including the main architectural monument of the city - St. Nicholas
Chernoostrovsky Monastery. The military events that took place in
Maloyaroslavets during the two Patriotic Wars served as a pretext for
him to receive the honorary title "City of Military Glory" in 2012. In
the last days of October, the historical reconstruction of the
Maloyaroslavets battle takes place every year.
Almost all the sights of Maloyaroslavets are
concentrated along its main historical highway - the old Warsaw highway,
which within the city is divided into four sections: Moskovskaya,
Lenina, Kaluzhskaya and Podolsky cadets streets. The center of the city
is Lenin Square (formerly Torgovaya), where the Monument of Glory of the
War of 1812 is located, the main temples, the preserved buildings of
government offices and the postal station of the 1840s.

the adjacent territory and in the monastery itself, the Maloyaroslavets
battle with the troops of Napoleon took place, as a result of which the
monastery was badly damaged. Until now, you can see traces of French
shrapnel above the entrance, preserved by order of Emperor Alexander I.

territory of the temple is closed.

Monastery and the bank of the Luzha River. Here you can find traces of

Church of the
Transfiguration, st. Proletarskaya, 73V. The wooden temple-chapel with a
hipped roof was built in 2009 on the site of the Church of the Savior

differ much from other modern temples, it is definitely worth a visit
because of the observation deck that is equipped next to it. From here
you have a great view of the St. Nicholas Chernoostrovsky Monastery and
the ancient settlement.

crowned with a scaly onion dome with a gilded hexagonal cross.

A significant number of gypsies live in Maloyaroslavets - they settled here en masse, 101 kilometers from Moscow in the post-war period. Most gypsies have jobs and do not annoy others, but near the railway station and in the city center you can almost always meet women and children asking for financial help or offering to tell fortunes. Given the traditional gypsy practice of divorce for money, it is better to bypass them and politely refuse all their offers.
1 Vorobyovo estate, Vorobyovo village. It was founded in 1897 by the
famous St. Petersburg surgeon Sergei Petrovich Fedorov, the father of
Russian urology. By 1904, he built here a two-story house with a turret
and terraces, an outpatient clinic for peasants and a parish school.
Since 1945, the recreational sanatorium "Vorobyovo" has been located on
the territory of the former estate. The blue-and-white Art Nouveau house
of the surgeon Fedorov with its twisted cast-iron staircase is very
similar to the Morozov Dacha in neighboring Obninsk - both buildings are
attributed to the famous architect Lev Kekushev. In 2006, a museum was
opened here, but now it does not work, and the building is gradually
decaying. Although Fedorov's house is located on the territory of the
sanatorium, access to it is free. You can get there by car or on foot
from the platform of the 140th km, where electric trains from
Maloyaroslavets stop towards Kaluga.

a park with a pond have survived to this day. All this requires
restoration, which began, but was never completed. Since 2008, Mansurovo
has become a branch of the Yasnaya Polyana Estate Museum and a
scientific and cultural center is planned to be located here.

country hotel. You can get here by your own car or taxi, or by regular
